Glass that is chipped or split can let spills reach live parts. Learn which marks on a glass cooktop are cosmetic and which mean you should stop cooking.
A dropped pot, a heavy cast iron skillet, or sugar that cooked onto the surface can leave a mark on a glass-ceramic cooktop. Some marks are only cosmetic. Others are a real safety concern.
A broken panel no longer seals the cooktop. Spilled liquid can run down to the wiring below, which risks a short or a shock when you touch the surface, and heating a damaged panel makes the crack grow.
Cracks cannot be patched or sealed. The whole glass panel must be replaced, and on an older cooktop we will help you weigh that cost against a new unit. If the impact also bent the frame or hurt an element underneath, you will hear it from us before work starts.
Lift pans rather than sliding them, keep pan bottoms clean and flat, and remove sugary spills while warm with a razor scraper held at a shallow angle.
If you are unsure how bad a mark is, send us a photo and we will help you decide. Our cooktop repair page explains what we handle, and our coverage list shows the Houston neighborhoods we reach.
