On KitchenAid electric radiant touch-control cooktops such as the KCES550HSS or KECC664BSS, F12 points to a problem with a hotplate (a cooking surface, burner or element) or the wiring that feeds it. The affected cooking area stops heating, or the whole cooktop shuts down with the code on the display. Because the code names the cooking area side of the cooktop, a reset helps only if the problem was a momentary glitch. Owners often notice that one area stays cold while the display keeps the code.
1. Turn all cooking areas off and let the glass cool. 2. Look for visible cracks or damage on the surface, but do not lift the glass. 3. Switch the breaker off for a minute and back on, then test an area. 4. Should F12 come back, stop cooking on it and ring us.
The code points to a cooking area or its wiring in general. Try each area in turn, and tell us which ones heat and which do not, so we can narrow it down.
It is better not to. A problem in the wiring or control can affect the whole cooktop, so leave it off until it has been looked at.
A reset is worth one try, but it will not repair a failed element or damaged wire. If F12 returns, the hotplate or its wiring needs testing.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
