KitchenAid KCIG550J 30-Inch Induction Cooktop Repair

KitchenAid cooktop

Most common issues on this model

  1. Zone does not detect a compatible pan
  2. One induction coil module not heating
  3. Touch panel that ignores input or registers touches by itself
  4. PowerBoost tripping the household breaker

Induction cooktops fail differently from radiant ones, and the KCIG550J is no exception. Each of its five elements has its own coil and sensing, so a zone that refuses to heat is usually a problem with that one zone instead of the whole surface. The 10-inch dual zone adds a second coil ring to the same job, which gives us another path to test when a large pan heats unevenly. It sits flush in a 30-inch countertop opening.

Before opening the unit, we try a flat, magnetic pan, because pan detection depends on it. We then test coil resistance, the cooling fan, and the connection to the touch panel. A panel that registers touches on its own is often damp underneath or has lost a ground.

PowerBoost pulls extra current for a short time, so if your breaker trips when it starts, we look at both the cooktop and the circuit. You see the price in writing first, and our 30-day warranty covers the work.

KCIG550JKCIG550J questions
My KCIG550J keeps flashing a pan symbol and will not heat. What should I check?

Make sure the pan is magnetic, flat and centered over the ring. If a magnet sticks and the zone still ignores it, the sensing or coil for that zone needs testing, which we do with a meter and the control board connection.

Why does my breaker trip when I use PowerBoost on the KCIG550J?

PowerBoost draws extra current for a short burst, so a breaker already loaded by other appliances may trip. We test the cooktop for a real problem, and if it is sound we explain that the circuit is what needs an electrician.

The touch controls on my KCIG550J turn zones on by themselves. Why?

Moisture or a spill near the panel can read as a touch. Wipe it completely dry and power it down for a minute. If it keeps happening, we test the panel and its ground connection.
