KCIG556J

KitchenAid KCIG556J Induction Cooktop With Five Elements

KitchenAid cooktop

Most common issues on this model

  1. Element that stops heating partway through a cook
  2. Touch control panel that is slow, erratic or unresponsive
  3. Cooling fan noise or overheating shutoff after long cooking
  4. Cracked or chipped glass surface that lets spills reach the electronics

The KCIG556J is a flush-mounted 36-inch induction cooktop with five elements and sensor controls. It is usually dropped into a countertop above a drawer base or a wall oven stack, and the space under it is often used for storage, which matters: stuffed drawers can block the airflow that the cooling fans need.

When an element drops out, the first thing we ask about is the pan, because induction only heats cookware a magnet will grip. After that we test each element, the sensor input and the touch panel, and we look under the cooktop for dust, loose connectors and pinched wiring. The KCIG556JBL and KCIG556JSS are the same cooktop in other finishes. You get the price in writing before we start.

KCIG556JKCIG556J questions
One of the five elements on my KCIG556J shuts off while cooking. Why?

Overheating protection is the common reason: a blocked cooling path or a failing fan makes the cooktop cut power to protect itself. We check the airflow and fan, then the element and its power board.

The touch panel responds only some of the time. Can it be fixed?

Often yes. Moisture or residue near the controls causes it, and so does a loose connection under the glass. We clean and test the panel and replace it only if the readings show it has failed.

Do I need special pots for this cooktop?

You need cookware that a magnet sticks to, with a flat base. If a pan is rejected, that is normal behavior, not damage. Bring us the pan if you are unsure and we will test it on the zone.
