On KitchenAid electric radiant (smoothtop) touch-control cooktops, for example the KCES550HSS or KECC664BSS, a display that begins with the letter U can carry three different meanings. It may say no pan is detected on the cooking area, show that the Keep Warm function is on, or point to a problem with the electrical power supply. Which one applies depends on whether a pan is in place and how the cooktop was set.
1. Check whether a suitable utensil sits centered on the area you selected and swap in a larger one if needed. 2. If you did not mean to use Keep Warm, turn that area off and start over. 3. Reset the cooktop breaker once, wait a minute and watch the display. 4. If U keeps appearing with a pan in place, stop and call us.
It is used for more than one message. The common ones are no pan detected on that area and Keep Warm being active. A third meaning is a power supply problem, so the right answer depends on what you had set.
The pan may be too small, off center or not the right size for that cooking area. Move it to the middle and try a larger utensil. If U remains, the area or its control needs checking.
Only when the message came from a power supply glitch. Switch the breaker off, wait a moment, switch it back on and watch for a minute. If the U returns, there is likely an actual supply or control issue.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
