On KitchenAid electric smoothtop and induction ranges, for instance the KSEG700ESS, KFEG500ESS or KSIB900ESS, the codes C81, C82 and C83 tell you the cooking surface got too hot and the automatic shutoff stepped in. If the oven is running, switch it off, give the surface 5 minutes to cool, then turn the cooktop on again and make sure it works.
1. Switch the oven off if it is on. 2. Turn every cooktop element off. 3. Leave the surface alone for 5 minutes so it cools. 4. Turn the cooktop on again and see whether it heats. 5. If a C8 code comes back, stop using the cooktop and call us.
The surface cooking area overheated, and the automatic shutoff activated to protect it. Turn the oven off if it is running, since it can add heat around the cooktop.
Wait 5 minutes for the surface to cool, with the oven off, then turn the cooktop back on and check that it heats as it should.
If C81, C82 or C83 returns after the 5-minute cooldown, call us. A shutoff that repeats points to the cooktop or its control, and we quote the visit in writing first.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
