On older KitchenAid ranges that use hyphen-format electronic oven control codes, F1-3 points to the oven temperature sensor, the control, or the wiring around them. The oven control uses that sensor to hold the set temperature. When F1-3 appears in the display window, you may find the oven cools off or never warms up, and a bake already underway can be canceled without warning.
1. Press Cancel or Clear. 2. Open the oven door and let the cavity cool for half an hour. 3. Switch off at the breaker for a minute, then restore power. 4. Re-set the clock and preheat the oven. 5. If you smell gas at any point on a gas model, go outside and call the gas utility. 6. If F1-3 returns, call us.
The oven may stop heating or hold a wrong temperature, so check what is inside and finish cooking another way. The code itself does not make food unsafe.
It can clear a one-time glitch. If the sensor or its wiring is actually failing, the code returns on the next preheat, and a test visit is the better use of your time.
