Foil, Pans and Spills on the Floor of Your KitchenAid Range Oven: What Is Safe

Lining the oven bottom with foil is a popular habit that can damage the finish and the heating parts. Here is a safer way to catch drips.

Many home cooks line the oven floor with foil to catch drips from pies and casseroles. It seems harmless, but it can lead to real damage and, in some cases, a safety risk.

Why foil on the floor is a problem

  • It traps heat. On models with a hidden bake element, foil can overheat the element and the surrounding enamel.
  • It can melt into the finish. Foil that fuses to hot enamel leaves marks that do not come off.
  • It blocks airflow. Gas ovens need air to reach the burner, and a covered floor can change the flame.
  • Dripping sugar and cheese burn onto the foil and the finish below it.

A safer approach

  1. Put a rimmed baking sheet on a lower rack, not on the floor, to catch drips.
  2. Use a pan that is slightly larger than the dish above it.
  3. Leave the rack positions clear so air can move around the food.
  4. Wipe up cooled spills before the next bake so they do not smoke.

When smoke appears

If a spill smokes, turn the oven off and keep the door closed to starve flames of air. Open a window and run the hood. Do not pour water into a hot oven. Once it cools, remove the burned residue with a non-abrasive cleaner that is safe for your oven finish.

Check the oven afterward

After a heavy boil-over or a foil mishap, look at the bake element or burner area. Blistered enamel, bent metal, or a flame that looks uneven all deserve a closer look before you cook again.

If something looks scorched or the oven no longer heats evenly after a spill, we can inspect it and give you a written price first. Start on our range repair page and see the neighborhoods we serve.
