On KitchenAid induction cooktops such as the KCIG550JSS, FC E4 points to a possible problem with the wire harness connecting the Cooktop User Interface (Touchpad) to the Induction Module. That cable carries your commands to the power electronics. If it is damaged or loose, the zones cannot follow the keys, and the code appears. Owners typically notice that the glass lights up and the keys seem alive, yet the zones do nothing, because the cable between the two is where the message is lost.
1. Turn off all zones. 2. Switch the breaker off for a minute and then on. 3. Press the power key and watch the response. 4. If FC E4 appears again, leave the cooktop and call us. 5. Keep cookware off the zones and note what the keys do when pressed.
It carries signals between the touchpad and the induction module. A damaged wire means the module never gets your commands, even though the touchpad lights up.
Usually we replace the harness or re-seat its connectors. Splicing is not a good practice on this type of cable, and we tell you the written price for the proper replacement.
Heat cycling and age can make connections loose, and a cabinet that was serviced recently may have pinched it. Mention any recent work near the cooktop.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
