What 3d31 means

On KitchenAid wall ovens and combination wall ovens using the lower-case four-character codes, 3d31 asks you to confirm the meat probe is pushed securely into its receptacle, whose location varies by model. If the probe is seated and the code stays, the oven should be power reset and watched for one minute. The display shows 3d31 and probe-based cooking may be unavailable. Once the message clears, baking without the probe is normally still possible.

Common causes of 3d31

  • Meat probe plug not fully inserted in the receptacle
  • Probe or its receptacle failing to make contact
  • Control not recovering after a power reset
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Remove the meat probe and look for food residue on the plug. 2. Wipe the plug dry, then push it firmly into the receptacle until it stops. 3. Press Cancel, then cut power at the breaker for one minute and restore it. 4. Watch the display for a full minute. If 3d31 does not return, cook normally; if it does, skip the probe and call us.

! Why to stop there
  • The probe jack is wired into the control, so testing it means opening the oven's electronics.
  • Bending or forcing a worn receptacle can make the contact worse.
  • If the probe itself is damaged, cooking with it keeps triggering the code.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Where is the meat probe receptacle?

On most KitchenAid wall ovens it is on the oven cavity wall near the front, but the location varies by model. Look for a small round socket that matches the probe plug. Check the front edge of the cavity wall first. If you cannot find it, the use-and-care booklet for your model shows where the socket sits.

Can I still bake without the probe?

Usually yes. Take the probe out, cancel the code, and use timed or temperature cooking. If the oven refuses even then, the issue has gone beyond probe seating. A timed bake with a separate thermometer keeps a roast safe while the socket question is sorted out.

Does 3d31 mean I need a new probe?

Not at first. Seating is the usual cure. If a firmly seated probe still triggers the code, the probe or socket is the next thing we check, with the price quoted before any work. A damaged probe cable can also harm the socket it plugs into, so stop probe cooking if the cable looks nicked.
