KitchenAid Double Wall Oven: One Oven Heats and the Other Stays Cool

When only the upper or lower oven works, the problem is usually narrower than a whole-unit failure. Here is how we narrow it down.

A double wall oven has two cavities that share a cabinet, a power feed and sometimes a control. When one side heats and the other does not, that tells us a lot.

What it usually is not

If one oven works normally, the power feed and the main control are probably fine. That is useful news, because it points toward a part that serves only the dead cavity.

Parts that fail on one side

  • The bake element or ignitor. On electric models the bake element can burn out. On gas models the ignitor can weaken and fail to open the gas valve.
  • The temperature sensor. A bad sensor can stop the cavity from heating or shut it off early.
  • A relay or wiring connection. Heat and age can loosen a terminal and cut power to that element.
  • The door switch or latch. If the control thinks the door is open, it may refuse to heat.

Checks you can safely do

  1. Look through the window while the oven is on. A bake element that stays black is not heating.
  2. Make sure the oven is not in a lock or sabbath-style mode.
  3. Try a different mode, such as bake and convection, to see whether the problem changes.
  4. Reset the unit at the breaker for one minute.

What we do

We test the element with a meter, check the sensor reading, and inspect the wiring harness for scorch marks. Because the other oven works, this is often a single-part repair.

Plan ahead

If you host in the cooler months, deal with the problem before the season starts. A single working oven makes a holiday menu much harder.

We will give you a written price before we start. Take a look at our wall oven repair page and see which areas we cover on the service area page. Both ovens are covered by our 30-day workmanship warranty once the repair is finished.
