What F4 means

On KitchenAid electric single, double and combination wall ovens such as the KOSE507ESS or KODE500ESS, a plain F4 means the oven cavity control, or the wiring tied to it, may have a problem. The display holds the code in place of normal settings, and the oven can stop heating or ignore commands until the control recovers. Because the cavity control sits behind the display, what you notice depends on how far it has stopped responding, from a dead keypad to a cycle that never begins.

Common causes of F4

  • Oven cavity control not working correctly
  • Wiring or connector problem at the control
  • Control that needs replacing after a failed reset
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Press Cancel and let the oven cool. 2. Turn the oven's breaker off for a minute, then on. 3. Check that the display returns to the clock and accepts a short bake. 4. If F4 appears again, leave the oven off and call us. Avoid pulling the oven forward.

! Why to stop there
  • A control problem cannot be seen or fixed from outside the cabinet.
  • The oven is wired straight into household power.
  • We give a written price first and stand behind the work with a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

F4F4 questions
What is the oven cavity control?

It is the electronics that manage heating and settings for the oven cavity. When F4 appears, the oven is saying that control, or the wiring to it, may not be working as it should.

Is a plain F4 the same as F4 E1?

No. Codes with a second character, such as F4 E1, point to specific parts, and on the microwave side of a combination oven they refer to different items. Plain F4 is the cavity control and wiring.

Will a reset fix it?

Sometimes a reset clears a one-off glitch. If F4 comes back, the control or its wiring needs testing, and we can do that on site with a written quote.
