What F5 means

On KitchenAid electric single, double and combination wall ovens such as the KOSE500ESS or KODE500ESS, F5 means the oven door latch assembly, the door latch switches, or the wiring may have a problem. The oven cannot confirm that the door is latched the way it expects. You will see the code on the display, and heating or a locked cycle may not start.

Common causes of F5

  • Door latch assembly not moving or sensing correctly
  • Door latch switches giving a wrong signal
  • Wiring problem in the latch circuit
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Press Cancel and close the oven door firmly. 2. Check that nothing, such as a pan handle or towel, holds the door open a crack. 3. Reset the breaker for a minute, then restore power. 4. If F5 returns, do not force the door or the latch. Call us.

! Why to stop there
  • Forcing a latch that is sticking can bend it or break the door switch.
  • The switches and wiring sit inside the oven body.
  • We quote in writing first, and the repair has a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

F5F5 questions
What is the oven checking when it shows F5?

It watches the door latch assembly and its switches to confirm the door position. When those signals do not match what it expects, or the wiring has a problem, it posts F5.

Is this the same as a steam oven F5?

No. This page covers the standard wall oven, where the latch meaning applies. Steam ovens have their own separate page for F5 and are handled differently.

Can I cook with the door closed anyway?

The oven may refuse to heat while the latch circuit reports a problem. Please do not bypass the door or the latch, since the latch exists to keep the oven safe.
