What C81 or C83 means

On KitchenAid electric radiant and shared induction cooktops, including the KCES550HSS and KECC664BSS, C81 or C83 means the cooktop has overheated. The control reacts by calling for all surface controls to be turned off. Heat has built up beneath the glass, often because airflow to the underside is restricted, and the cooktop usually stops heating until it cools. The cooktop typically returns to normal only after the temperature drops.

Common causes of C81 or C83

  • Restricted airflow to the bottom of the cooktop
  • A closed cabinet below that traps heat when no oven is installed
  • Cooking at high settings for a long stretch with an empty or oversized pan
  • A temperature sensor or control that reports heat that is not there
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn all surface controls to OFF. 2. Make sure nothing blocks the space under the cooktop, such as stored pans or boxes. 3. If no oven sits below the cooktop, open the cabinet doors to help the heat leave. 4. Let the cooktop cool fully before using it again, and call us if C81 or C83 returns quickly.

! Why to stop there
  • Repeated overheating can shorten the life of the control electronics.
  • Finding out whether the heat is real or a bad reading takes proper testing under the glass.
  • The repair is priced in writing first and stands behind a 30-day guarantee.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

C81 or C83C81 or C83 questions
Is C81 different from C83?

The cooktop treats both as the same overheating condition, and the response is identical: turn everything off, check airflow and let it cool. Which one shows is not something an owner can act on differently.

Can I keep cooking after it cools down?

Yes, once the glass has cooled and the underside has airflow. If the code comes back within a short time under normal use, the cooktop is overheating for a reason we should track down.

Why does the cabinet below matter?

A cooktop over a closed cabinet has nowhere for heat to escape. Opening the cabinet doors helps, and clearing stored items keeps air moving beneath the glass.
