KitchenAid KSS48FT Built-In Side-by-Side Repair

KitchenAid refrigerator

Most common issues on this model

  1. Ice maker stops dropping cubes, usually from a frozen fill tube or a weak inlet valve
  2. Freezer side frosting over because the defrost heater or sensor has quit
  3. Condenser fan or evaporator fan noise as bearings wear
  4. Door gaskets that no longer seal flush against the cabinet frame
  5. Water leaking inside the fresh-food side from a clogged defrost drain

The KSS48FT is a 48-inch built-in side-by-side, so it normally sits flush between cabinets or inside a custom surround in a larger kitchen. Because it is boxed in, airflow around the condenser is limited, and dust packed behind the grille is one of the first things we clear.

With an automatic ice maker and four adjustable glass shelves, this unit sees heavy daily use, and the ice and water path tends to age before anything else does. We check the fill tube, the inlet valve and the ice mold, then move to the evaporator fan and defrost system if the freezer side is warm or frosted.

Gaskets on a door this size flex a lot, so we also test the seal around the full perimeter. You get a written price before any work begins, and our repairs carry a 30-day workmanship warranty.

KSS48FTKSS48FT questions
Why does the ice maker on my KSS48FT make a few cubes and then stop?

Most often the fill tube has frozen or the water inlet valve is delivering too little flow. We check the line pressure, thaw and inspect the tube, and test the valve and the mold heater before touching anything else.

Can a built-in side-by-side like this be serviced without pulling it out of the cabinets?

Often yes. Fans, the defrost parts, the ice maker and the door seals are reachable from the front or by opening the interior panels. If the unit has to slide out, we tell you that before the visit.

The freezer side of my 48-inch unit is frosting up. What does that point to?

Frost on the back wall usually means the defrost cycle is not completing. We test the defrost heater, the sensor and the control, and also look for a blocked drain that lets meltwater refreeze.
